Rest Site thumbnails
Fast travel destination images — assign a custom Texture2D or capture the real rendered scene from each site's independent Thumbnail Capture View, with auto-framing, margins, and configurable resolution and output path.
Fast Travel can display either a project-authored image or a scene capture generated from each Rest Site’s independent Thumbnail Capture View.
Workflow 1: assign a custom image
Assign a Texture2D to the Rest Site’s Thumbnail property. WSRF uses that image directly.
A manually assigned image is never silently overwritten. If Capture Thumbnail would replace the assignment, WSRF asks for explicit confirmation.
Workflow 2: Capture Thumbnail
- Create the Rest Site through Make Rest Site, or click Create Missing Placement Points.
- Select WSRF_ThumbnailCaptureView in the Actor’s Components tree.
- Move and rotate the camera independently of the Rest Site mesh.
- Adjust its Field Of View and Post Process settings if needed.
- Optionally use Auto Frame Camera.
- Click Capture Thumbnail in the Rest Site Details panel.
The capture contains the real rendered scene:
- level architecture;
- lighting;
- fog and atmosphere;
- props;
- the Rest Site and surrounding composition.
It is not the player camera and it is not an isolated mesh thumbnail.
The independent camera
The Thumbnail Capture View is editor-only and selectable in the Components tree. Its transform does not rotate the presentation mesh, Player Respawn Point, or Fast Travel Arrival Point.
New helper cameras use manual exposure defaults suitable for deterministic one-shot capture. The capture also persists rendering state and warms the scene capture before reading pixels so Lumen and scene lighting can resolve.
If a capture is too dark, inspect the Thumbnail Capture View itself:
- camera direction and occlusion;
- Auto Exposure Method and Exposure Bias;
- local lighting;
- Field Of View;
- fog and Post Process overrides.
Changing unrelated player-camera exposure does not alter this capture.
Auto Frame
Use Automatic Framing and Auto Frame Camera position the Thumbnail Capture View from the Rest Site Actor bounds and the configured Framing Margin. Auto Frame is an explicit editor operation, not a runtime Tick.
Disable automatic framing before manually composing a camera that should not be moved by later editor adjustments.
Resolution and output
Project defaults, configurable in Project Settings:
| Setting | Default |
|---|---|
| Thumbnail Resolution | 1024 x 576 |
| Thumbnail FOV fallback | 60 degrees |
| Thumbnail Aspect Ratio | 16:9 |
| Output path | /Game/WSRF/RestSiteThumbnails |
When a real Thumbnail Capture View exists, its camera Field Of View and aspect are used. The generated Texture2D is assigned to the Rest Site and can be displayed by the official or custom Fast Travel Widget Blueprint.
Profiles share thumbnail defaults, not the final image or camera. The final Thumbnail and Thumbnail Capture View always belong to the individual Rest Site.
Missing thumbnails
A missing thumbnail is a warning, not a runtime error
The official Fast Travel UI uses its provided placeholder. Custom widgets receive the Thumbnail field and should provide their own visual fallback without changing gameplay availability.
For the module as a whole, see the Bonfire & Checkpoint overview.
